UPDATE (Friday, 3:30 p.m.): Sunday's Frozen Toes Trail Run, mentioned below, has been postponed to April 22. Click here for more details.
You logged the miles, sweat buckets, scarfed carbs and ran the race but fell short of finishing. Not because you quit or suffered a crippling injury, but because pranksters moved signs along the route.
Sound like a nightmare? It was a devastating reality for 40 runners in North Wales. They ran only 11.3 miles of the 13.1-mile course.
If the race didn't kill me first, this revelation would. I'm not a professional runner. I wouldn't even classify myself as competitive in the traditional sense. I'm running the Lincoln Half this May because I love a challenge, not to place in the top 10 – or 100 for that matter. But if I decide to run a certain distance, be it 3 or 13, I do it. No questions asked, no backing out, minimal complaining. (Why, God, why?!)
I can only imagine how furious I'd be if someone took away my choice to test – or is it torture? – myself via road race.
It's bad enough when I botch my own run. I've miscalculated distance before and unknowingly ran too few laps only to realize my mistake after I've stopped. I cope by cranking up my playlist and taking it out on my strength routine. More moves. More reps.
If I finish the Lincoln Half in May without actually having run 13.1 miles, I won't have an iPod or a set of dumbbells, though, so beware. (I'm picturing a meltdown worthy of reality television.)
How do you handle a less-than-stellar workout? Leave a comment at the bottom of the page – I'd love to know.
Facts, figures and whattayaknows:
> > > I'm in love with my Mizuno running shoes. They're blue and silver and feel like a cloud. But I'd consider switching loyalties if it meant getting my feet in a pair of these glow-in-the-dark Asics. The bright colors and highly reflective material improves visibility during low-light hours. Perfect for runs before dawn or after dusk. I'd rock ‘em in daylight, too! There's a man-friendly version, too, guys. Don't let the pink throw you.
> > > Saturday's Trek Up the Tower is full, but you can still sign up for the Frozen Toes Trail Run on Sunday. The high is 38 degrees with a chance of snow showers. Expect wind, too. Tranquility Park in west Omaha hosts the 5-mile course. The race starts at 1 p.m., and registration costs $30. Click here for details.
> > > Calling fans of The Walking Dead. A new iPhone app is inspiring zombie fanatics to get off the couch and run for their lives. Called Zombies, Run!, the audio app sends players on 13 different missions to outlast the flesh-eating creatures who chase them. If caught, they must repeat the level. It's available Monday. Check out the tutorial below to see if Zombies, Run! is the motivation you need.
