RED OAK, Iowa — The Montgomery County YMCA in Red Oak has an extra $2,500 to put toward youth programs, thanks to farmer Jon Young.

Young, of Elliot, Iowa, chose the YMCA as beneficiary after winning the money through America's Farmers Grow Communities, a project of the Monsanto Fund. The program selects farmers from counties in 39 states and allows them to donate the money to the nonprofit organization of their choice.

Young and his wife, Beth, are involved in YMCA youth programs, according to a press release from Monsanto.

"The Y in Montgomery County reaches people in a lot of different communities and is a huge benefit to children," Beth Young said in the release. "We believe a community benefits from the people who live there being healthy and active, so that is the great bonus of having the YMCA in our county."

The YMCA will use the $2,500 to fund more than a dozen youth activities.

"The Youngs are very important to our programs, so we want to honor their wishes and use this money to make a better experience for kids," said Nick Zimmer, director of the Montgomery YMCA.
