Sidney Hirsch had a red-hot time Saturday on a record-warm day for the Omaha South Invitational.

The Millard West junior posted the only record of the meet with her time of 5:08.40 in the girls 1,600 meters at Burke Stadium. She lopped more than four seconds off the previous standard of 5:13.5 by Millard West's Merideth Snow in 2003.

“It's faster than what my PR (personal record) was for last year,” Hirsch said. “I like the heat. I have to run someplace warm in college.”

Her season goal, she said, is to break the 5-minute mark with an eye on Snow's school record of 4:58.89.

“I was hoping to go 5:10 today, so I'm happy being in the 5:08s,'' Hirsch said.

What could help her top Snow's record is competition at practice. Shae Spady is a freshman who finished third at the state cross country meet — Hirsch was second as the Wildcat girls won their first state title in the sport — and she ran a 5:23 on Saturday to finish second in the 1,600.

“We train together and she definitely pushes me,'' said Hirsch, who came back later in the meet to win the 3,200.

Two-time defending Class A state champion Omaha North, with Danielle Jones outdueling Spady on the anchor lap, rallied to win the 1,600-meter relay to edge the Wildcats 130-128 for the team title.

The Vikings had two four-gold winners. Alexa Whitehall captured the 100 and 400 and ran on the winning 400 and 1,600 relays. Brianna McGhee took the 200, the 100 high hurdles and long-jump titles and ran on the 400 relay that was timed in 49.30.

North also won the boys title, beating 2011 winner Omaha Westside 160-131. The Vikings won all three relays and Dillon McCoy was the 200 champion.
