Master Gardeners offer Bluffs workshop
Welcome spring at the West Pottawattamie Master Gardeners’ spring conference.
The Iowa State University Extension Master Gardeners of West Pottawattamie County will hold the 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 30 event at the Council Bluffs Senior Center. Cost is $30 if registered by Friday or $35 if coming the day of the event. Payment includes lunch and refreshments.
Thirteen workshops will be offered by gardening experts from Iowa and Nebraska. Those attending will chose six sessions. Venders will sell gardening items.
Preregistration is recommended, with forms available at the Senior Center, Iowa State University Extension, local businesses and at extension.iastate.edu/westpottawattamie/. For more information, call the Extension office, 712-366-7070.
What did Indian nation think of explorers?
Matt “Sitting Bear” Jones will present a program on “Otoe and Missouria Meet Big Knives” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Visitor Center, 601 Riverfront Drive. Admission is free.
This program examines the first and second meetings between Lewis and Clark and the Otoe-Missouria Nation. Using the nation’s oral history, the program examines the perceptions the nation had of these white people and the historical repercussions that the Otoe-Missouria experienced after first contact.
Jones is a Kiowa/Otoe-Missouria Indian who has been involved in the revival of the oral tradition of storytelling for more than 20 years.
Fur trade talk is Thursday in Herman
Darrel Draper will present “Nebraska: Crossroads of the Western Fur Trade” at the Washington County Historical Association Talk at 7 p.m. Thursday.
His humorous presentation will be at the American Legion Hall on U.S. Highway 75 in Herman, Neb. The public is welcome.
