Lochte shows improvement
Ryan Lochte tossed aside the swimming brief and got down to business Sunday. Switching to a regular racing suit for the first time in three days of competition, Lochte salvaged an otherwise underwhelming weekend performance by winning the 200 IM and setting a meet record at the Charlotte Grand Prix.

Phelps still fine-tuning in Charlotte
For Michael Phelps, it's time to head to the mountains. The 14-time Olympic gold medalist showed he still has some work to do before the London Games, settling for another runner-up finish at the Charlotte Grand Prix on Saturday. He was edged by China's Wu Peng in the 200-meter butterfly, losing to the same swimmer who ended Phelps' long winning streak in one of his signature events a year ago in Michigan.

Chloe Sutton won the 1,500-meter freestyle and Chad LaTourette took the 800 free on opening night of the Charlotte UltraSwim Grand Prix meet.

Berens eager for Swim Trials, ticket to Olympics
Ricky Berens didn't have much trouble staying focused for this week's Charlotte UltraSwim. The trip gives him a chance to return to his hometown in North Carolina and even sleep in his old bed at his parents' house. The Grand Prix meet will be a return to the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center, where Berens has swum in a number of meets over the years and posted some of his best performances.

Swimmer Lezak goes solo to prepare for Olympic trials
It is a cool, overcast morning and 10 swimmers of varying skills are taking a lesson in one corner of the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center. Some bellies hang over the swim suits and a woman keeps mumbling about getting water in her ear. These aren't pros or even talented youngsters.

Soni's brilliant stroke
Rebecca Soni's most vivid memory of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha wasn't winning the 200 breaststroke or making the American team for Beijing. It was working out in the practice pool inside the Qwest Center when a storm packing 115-mph winds ripped off part of the roof. She and other swimmers were herded to shelter while civil defense sirens wailed.
